What do you think might have happened if Chelsea Clinton were pregnant at 17 in the White House?? Just curious on your thoughts about all this.

Also, what is up with the Palin kids' names?! Seriously, did she drop silverware and try to make a name for the sound it made or what?! I'm also annoyed that everyone and their mother assumes all Christians are Republicans.

Not only is Governor Sarah's daughter pregnant, but she's getting married while still in high school! Don't get me started on this Palin bullshit. She sort of stumbled into her position as governor a year and a half ago, hasn't done a terribly good job of running the state of AK, and she sure as hell shouldn't be VP.

Alaska's sex ed programs -- backed by Governor Sarah -- are very abstinence-oriented, with very little focus on contraception. (At least if my freshmen are to be believed; one of my groups did their research project on sex ed in AK.) What a shock -- AK also has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the country. Furthermore, AK has a law that minors can get abortions without parental consent. So, you do the math on that...they're not learning about condoms in school, they're getting knocked up, they're having abortions, and their parents don't know about it.

*PLEASE stop saying "Governor Sarah"*

I don't care for excuses or if that's what you and other Alaskans do, just stop it. We don't say "Senator John". The only good reason to say "Hillary" was that the other Clinton was a prominent figure too. So, when you accidentally type "Sarah", use the backspace and type Palin instead.

I agree with Urs. It's totally disrespectful. Whether you hate McCain (or any other male politician) or not you show the respect of speaking of him with the formality of using his last name. Do the same for her.

I actually love that McCain picked Palin. I would never vote for either of them, but I love the fact that he very obviously picked a female for the sake of picking a female. Because let's be real, there was really no other reason to pick her with her insanely ridiculous lack of experience and total disconnect from the national political stage. He obviously saw that a female could bring something to the table that a dude could not. And that should mean a lot to feminists...whether she's a self-loathing (anti-woman), gun-tot'in politician or not :)

And, in response to your question, Lisa, I'm sure the Clintons never could have had a similar experience with Chelsea getting preggers and being afforded the type of courtesy that both parties are giving Palin. That's just how people deal with the Clintons.

We don't call Dubya by his last name...

...and Clinton was "Tubby." And Tommy Thompson was often "Tommy." What's the difference with Sarah Palin, other than that she hasn't been on the national arena long enough to get a nickname? (She has plenty in Alaska, one of which -- Barracuda Sarah -- has been used on at least a few national networks. Respectfully? Of course not. But then, "Dubya" doesn't exactly smack of endearment, yet nobody complains about that one.)

Do you think all the Christian groups would have ripped Clintons a new one or been as respectful or decent about this matter as they are being to the Palin family? I could care a less what you call her, why make some huge issue out of nothing. We all know Sig always has her little names for everyone - read back in her blog about any people and she usually doesn't call them any formal title. I just wanted to know what you thought of the whole pregnant issue.

No, Lise, I don't think the Christian groups would have been as kind to Chelsea Clinton if she'd shown up to an election pregnant. On the other hand, I don't think the Democrat-friendly groups would have been as hard on Chelsea Clinton as they were on the Bush twins for all their drunken college exploits, either. People are always more forgiving of their own.

I said I wouldn't take excuses, and those aren't even good enough.

No, I think it's a legitimate question. Why is it mandatory to give Sarah Palin respect by using her last name when it's not mandatory to respect these other public officials?

I have repeatedly referred to Pres. Bush as "Dubya" on this blog and my blog and Erica's blog, and probably a number of other blogs, and never once did anyone (Urs, Rock, or otherwise) reprimand me or suggest that it wasn't an acceptable thing to do.

I want to know: why is Sarah Palin any different? If I'm expected to change my behavior, I think it's only fair that it be explained to me why she's a special case. (Or, why Dubya and etc. are special cases, if that's how it is.)

Dubya is not his first name, it's the nickname that he goes by not only from the haters but also in his own party. Because duh, his father who was president before him has the same last name. Seems like the Clinton thing to me (Bill came into the limelight before Hillary, so he gets the last name recognition).

I agree with Rock though - while I would never vote for McCain/Palin because they are so staunchly opposite of me on issues, I think it's great that Palin accepted the challenge of potential VP. The one thing I've heard a lot of bitching about is the fact that she has a 4 month old child and is running, and how awful that is. From Democrats! From females! WTF??? Why would you tear down a working mom? How she parents her kids is none of our damn business! Don't we want the Republicans to get the fuck out of our business? So why are we ("we") acting like them? It makes me want to puke. Hate her on her stances on issues, not on her personal life. Who cares if she's a hockey mom? Who cares if she hunts or races snow machines?? The important thing is that she's a Republican and shares the party values, therefore she is someone we don't want running our gov't.

And as to Chelsea being 17 and pregnant - plainly and simply, it would've never happened. Because Chelsea is/was a bright, driven person and would've used birth control so as not to mess up her success later in life. Because getting pregnant at 17 makes it really hard to finish school and develop as your own person before you take on the big job of caring for another person (same with getting married that young).

And those are my judgmentals for the night. ;)

Basically, the far right fringe has done an excellent job of redefining Christianity to mean fundamentalist Evangelical. Nevermind that the majority of Christians are much more like you and my dad - moderate to liberal. Nevermind that Christianity can encompass everything from Orthodoxy to Unitarian Universalism. These people are SO LOUD and SO OBNOXIOUS that they've managed to set the agenda for an entire nation. Which is why I rail against them so much, incidentally, and manage to piss everybody else off in the process.

Actually, I call him George. I like calling him that, because it indicates that he's no more important than any set of balls I run into in a store.

Erica - I totally understand your annoyance with the extremely vocal Christians. It frustrates me to no end that these people are ruining what it means to be a Christian. You don't have to love or even agree with George (love that JMo) to love Jesus. A lot of my Christian friends & family find the need to plaster my email with slanderous made up junk about Barrick Obbama (honest to God that is how his name was spelled in an email this morning) and how McCain & Palin are God's greatest gift to us. I used to spend time actually reading the emails and then researching the actual truth and making sure whoever sent the junk to me was informed (and all those who the email was also sent to) - forget that - I'm done wasting my time. The Republicans could make Hitler appealing and not question it a bit.
